Southbound

Examines logging in the southeastern US and the controversy over chip mills.

A printer-friendly version of this page 47 minutes
Directed by Doug Hawes-Davis
Produced by High Plains Films

This video documents the quiet move over the last several years by multinational wood products companies from the heavily logged National Forests in the Pacific Northwest to the mostly privately owned, recovering forests of the southeastern United States. The video examines the controversy surrounding the proliferation of high-capacity chip mills, which are used to convert the diverse hardwood forests of the region to raw wood fiber for export.

Reviews
"As these companies race to feed the global demand for paper and lumber, citizens are fighting to protect remnants of the once great southern forest. SOUTHBOUND takes you to the heart of this struggle."
Affinity

"Hawes-Davis takes a leading position, alerting us to a vast environmental threat. While policy-makers and press are still pondering the fate of the Ancient Forests of the Pacific Northwest, SOUTHBOUND urges us to take stock of the recovering wild and natural forests in the Southeast that are again coming under attack as they were in the 1800's."
Save America's Forests

"Loggers, environmentalists, nature lovers, ordinary citizens, lawyers, politicians and others... testify before Doug Hawes-Davis' riveting documentary SOUTHBOUND.... Here...fly-by-night chip mills are welcomed with open arms by state governments and private landowners starved for quick easy cash. This has lead to rapacious clear-cutting throughout parts of Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee.... biologists explain why Alabama is now ranked third in the nation in its number of endangered species. Highly recommended."
Video Librarian

"Not just 'tree huggers' are heard from, as the ravages of unchecked clear-cutting are shown, but the shortsighted view of southern forests as just a mere 'crop' by the timber industry is hardly left in doubt."
Booklist

"Whatever the personal bias, no serious viewer can remain untouched by this video's numerous implications."
