Planet Neighborhood Series
Work

Energy-efficient skyscrapers, controlling waste, and innovative automobile design and recycling.

A printer-friendly version of this page 56 minutes
Closed Captioned

Directed by Bob Kaper
A Production of WETA-TV Washington DC, Executive Producer Richard Thomas, Produced by Larry Klein

Environmental challenges surround the places in which we work and the cars we use to get there. Featured are a look at "sick building syndrome" and the design of new office buildings for the 21st century; a visit with a chemical plant that has found solutions for controlling waste emissions; and a survey of new trends in automobiles and auto-recycling.

We see an extraordinary contrast between a multimillion dollar courthouse in Stuart, Fla., that has literally made its workers sick, and an innovative Manhattan skyscraper that even supplies its own fresh air.

The auto industry's trend toward 100% recyclability is illustrated by one man's profitable attempt to instill new life into old plastic bumpers; and a visit to a high school shop class where tomorrow's mechanics tackle the creation of a high-powered electric car.

Other titles in the series are:

Home - Green technology and innovative design save energy.

Community - Good community design and natural wastewater treatment.
