"A sympathetic portrait of women caught between traditional patriarchal values and the market economy." MultiCultural Review

Sushila is deaf and dumb. She sells herself on the street of Suva so she can go on providing for her elderly father.

Since the armed coup in 1987, Fiji has become a cauldron of ethnic persecution and human rights abuses. Male authority in Pacific culture is so deeply entrenched that women have no power to say 'no' to sexual exploitation. Prostitution is a taboo subject in Fiji and is illegal, but it is the women and not the men who get prosecuted.

Other titles in the series are:

World of Difference - Introductory film about women and human rights.

Girls from Chaka Street - The break-up of the Soviet Union leaves some women with few options but prostitution.

House on Fire - Breaking the cycle of domestic violence.

Young Wives' Tales - Very early marriage threatens girls' health and survival.

Reviews:
"A sympathetic portrait of women caught between traditional patriarchal values and the market economy." MultiCultural Review

"A chilling examination of the political and economic pressures in Fiji that have driven impoverished women toward careers in the sex trade."
Timothy McGettigan, author of "Utopia on Wheels"
