RIVERS TO THE SEA

46 minutes/Grades 7-Adult

(In two parts for schools part 1. 29 min., part 2. 17 min.)

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada/A film by John
Brett

Containing some of the most spectacular underwater footage
we've ever seen, this film was shot in all seasons, and explores
the abundant life in Atlantic coast rivers.

The river is the thread that binds together species as
different as salmon, lampreys, ospreys -- and humans. We watch
Atlantic salmon push on against all odds to their traditional
spawning grounds; immature eels, having arrived from the Sargasso
Sea, work their way into every accessible rivulet; at night
spawning smelt gleam silver in the glare of flashlights; and sea
lampreys excavate nests of coarse gravel with their sucker-like
mouths. Ospreys, kingfishers, cormorants, beavers, snapping
turtles, sturgeons, and bass are some of the creatures that appear
above or below the surface of the rushing river.

The film stresses that humans have a role in the river's
ecology. Clearcutting, herbicides, toxic wastes and fishing
activities put severe stress on river systems.

RIVERS TO THE SEA makes a powerful plea for the care and
management of our rivers, and shows us how much we have to lose.
