Subtitle: Impact on Life
23 minutes/Grades 9-Adult
Produced by Public Communications/A film by Kathleen Quaife and
Sam Love
Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have dramatically shown us the
need to be informed about the effects of radiation, whether it
comes from nuclear power plants, weapons, or even the radon
present in millions of homes across the country. In this film,
three leading experts explain the most important physical and
biological concepts of radiation, including stable and unstable
elements; ionizing radiation; the "half-life" of radioactive
materials; how radiation affects DNA; and how low levels of
radiation can be concentrated in the food chain. The effects of
high levels of radiation on the body are shown, and the
controversy over low levels is discussed. With Study Guide.
Awards: Best of Festival, 2nd Scientific Film Festival, Barcelona,
Spain; American Film Festival; World Future Society Conference
