POINTLESS POLLUTION:

Subtitle: America's Water Crisis

28 minutes/Grades 7-Adult

Produced by Wayne Ewing for Lower Colorado River
Authority/Presented and narrated by Walter Cronkite

Here's a vital message about an under-recognized cause of water
pollution. It's known as nonpoint source pollution, which
encompasses all runoff pollution that does not come from a single
source. It's the oil, grease, and trash on our streets that flows
into the drains during a downpour; the runoff of fertilizers and
pesticides from farmland, golf courses, and lawns. By some
estimates it contributes 80% of the contamination that is found in
this nation's water resources.

The program focuses on how non-point pollution has affected the
lives of people in four regions of the country. In the Chesapeake
Bay, a once thriving oyster industry has all but vanished. In
Minnesota, underground reservoirs have been contaminated. In
Tennessee, reservoirs have silted up, rendering the hydro
generators useless. And in Texas, nonpoint pollution is
threatening the Highland Lakes, as well as Barton Springs, a
popular spring-fed pool in Austin.

We all contribute to nonpoint pollution, and as Walter Cronkite
says, "How we live our lives on the land will determine what kind
of water we will leave for our children." With Study Guide
