PERSPECTIVES IN SCIENCE

201 minutes/Grades 7-12

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada/Series producer
Julie Stanfel

This is a series of interactive CLV videodiscs produced by the
National Film Board of Canada with the express purpose of
improving the quality of science teaching in today's classrooms.

Research has shown that North American children are staying
away from science because "It's boring"... and this at a time when
science and technology have a greater impact on our lives than
ever before!

What does interest students is the environment. This first
series of three one-hour discs tackles three prime environmental
subjects, TOXIC WASTE, BIOTECHNOLOGY, and WATER, and it does so
from a Science, Technology, and Society (STS) perspective. That
means that the discs cover not only basic concepts of science and
technology, they also address fundamental issues that arise from
the social impact of scientific and technological developments.

To get students immediately involved in the subject matter each
disc starts with a short open-ended drama that highlights a real-
life situation in which people are faced with difficult choices
brought on by technological developments.

Once students see the relevance of the topic to their lives
they are then free to investigate the scientific concepts that
need to be understood; or the latest technological fixes that may
or may not be appropriate; or the responses of citizens and
citizen groups to specific problems.

They can do this by working with the interactive structure of
the program. After the drama each program is divided, like a book,
into chapters. Within each chapter there are three sub-chapters: a
science section, a technology section and a society section. Each
segment is instantly accessible by barcode reader, or remote.

Using widely available authoring programs -- such as Macintosh
Hypercard Stacks, or Linkway for IBM computers, or HyperStudio for
Apple IIGS computers -- teachers can re-purpose these CLV discs
based on the short sub-chapters that are embedded in each disc.
This gives them the ultimate ability to make use of the huge
amount of information that each program contains in just the way
that suits them. With Study Guide
