20 minutes/Grades 7-Adult
Produced by the National Film Board of Canada
A beautifully shot film about the ecology of alpine zones,
which exist between the treeline and summits of the major mountain
chains in North America. Characterized by high snowfalls and
extreme cold over very long winters and short, arid, growing
seasons, they are among the harshest of earth's environments.
Yet they are home to a diverse and hardy community of living
things. From lichens surviving at the uppermost limits of life, to
lush and beautiful alpine meadows populated with insects, birds
and mammals, both large and small, the ecological connections and
special adaptations of this community are explained.
