INNER RHYTHM captures the intense process of collaboration
between composers John Lang and Ahmed Hassan and choreographer
Robert Desrosiers as they create the score for the futuristic
ballet BLUE SNAKE.
Usually a dance choreography is prepared for a musical
composition that already exists. But Robert Desrosiers works
differently. Beginning with an overall intuitive sense of the
finished piece, he introduces some of the movements he wants, then
experiments with the dancers' natural rhythms to find the detailed
form that his vision will take. He then works in tandem with the
musicians evolving the score as the choreography emerges.
As videotapes and audiotapes crisscross back and forth between
studios, the details of the music slowly clarify. Last minute
elaborations and refinements, then final recording and opening
night, reveal the sensational results of sequences we saw being
developed.
BLUE SNAKE, the companion film, shows the ballet in its
entirety.

- "The fact that both the dance and the music are created out of
silence give this film its unique quality... would be of great
interest in the academic environment where performing arts are
emphasized." *** Video Rating Guide
- "An intriguing documentation of an unusual piece... the nuts
and bolts of the creative process depicted in the film comes
across very well." AFVA Reviews
