EQUATORIAL RIVER

Subtitle: The Amazon

23 minutes/Grades 7-Adult

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada/A film by Bruce
Mackay and William Hansen

The Amazon is the biggest river system on Earth. The volume of
water it carries is greater than the combined flow of all other
rivers. It flows through the world's largest rainforest, a
hothouse of life where millions of years of evolution have created
a profusion of flora and fauna. Most of the known plant species
are found here, and an extraordinary variety of birds, reptiles,
mammals and insects are bound in intricate webs of co-evolution
with the river and the rainforest. EQUATORIAL RIVER shows how the
water and nutrient cycles work in the Amazon basin. It provides a
fundamental understanding of the interrelation of elements in this
enormous and threatened ecosystem, now seen to be so vital to our
planet. With Teacher's Guide.
