RIVER SPIRITS

28 minutes
Grades 7-Adult
With Study Guide
Produced by Francis Paynter
Directed by Arthur Twomey

From the producer of STILL LIFE FOR WOODPECKER? comes another
beautifully made film about the natural world. This time the
subject is conservation biology and the importance of
preserving intact ecosystems. The setting is the Purcell
Wilderness Conservancy of southeastern British Columbia.

Two world-class kayakers take horses and a charismatic mule
and pack their kayaks up into the unspoiled Columbia River
Valley, over the rock and ice of the Purcell Mountains up to
the Trikootenay Peak Glacier to Anderson Pass, and then make a
spectacular first descent of Carney Creek, a major wild river,
into Kootenay Lake. All told it's a journey of more than 60
miles through undivided wilderness, inhabited by moose and
grizzly bears and by spectacular vegetation. Intercut with
this adventure is the Ktunaxa tale of Yawo'neck, part of the
Ktunaxa creation myth.

The kayakers travel through a variety of ecosystems from a
desert like environment through deep old growth forests, past
avalanche slide paths, and up into alpine zones. They learn
first-hand how the river connects the highlands and the
lowlands, how one cannot exist without the other, and how
important it is to conserve the complete system.
