COOPERATING FOR CLEAN AIR

(One Second Before Sunrise, Program II -- Part 1)

37 minutes/Grades 7-A
COOPERATING
Produced by Horizon Communications, Hosted by Lynn Redgrave

In lakes and rivers, acid deposition alters aquatic biology,
weakening and breaking a vital link in the food chain. On
land, acid precipitation poisons the soil, groundwater and
forest growth. Acid precipitation in the air is associated
with increased respiratory problems among young people and the
elderly.

Sweden has responded to these threats with an all-out assault
on acid precipitation, global climate change and the
greenhouse effect. Since 1970, the nation has reduced
emissions of sulfur dioxide and other harmful pollutants and
gases by more than 70%. Sweden's government, industry and
citizenry have acted together to curb emissions from vehicles
and factories, design garbage-to-fuel plants that are accepted
in metropolitan areas, and harness energy from the wind, sun
and biomass.

COOPERATING FOR CLEAN AIR presents Sweden's initiatives as
practical and inspiring models for other nations, communities
and individuals. And, as energy looms high as a major threat
to world stability, the Swedish examples of wise production
and prudent use become even more important.
