Yosemite Park is a place where nature's grandeur has been
preserved. It is a place of awe and wonder; 97% of Yosemite is
still wilderness. But Yosemite's fragile ecosystem is being
threatened.
Tremendous crowds of visitors touring in automobiles have
created a variety of pollution problems. A new park shuttle
system has reduced both the need for parking lots and the
congestion and emissions caused by automobiles. Evening
campfires in the cliff-confined air are the primary cause of
air pollution at the park. But the most ominous threats are
those from outside the park, threats which cannot be managed
by changes in park policies and procedures. Migratory songbird
populations are declining because of the destruction of the
birds' wintering habitats in Central and South America. One-
third of the park's pine trees show ozone damage as a result
of pollution from regional development and congestion. The
numbers of all species of frogs in the park are dropping,
matching similar and, as yet unexplained, decreases in
amphibian numbers around the globe.
The fate of Yosemite is tied to the fate of the earth.
Everywhere and everyday, we must replace consuming and
polluting behaviors with those which will preserve the wonder
of our planet and sustain the health of our environment.
- "Amid impressive views of the sprawling scenic Yosemite
Valley, nonstrident narration cautions that this popular
national park faces ominous environmental threats." Booklist
