TURNING 16 is an 8-part series that explores whether there is
a global teenager. It focuses on the lives of six teens in
six different countries and examines the major issues facing
young people everywhere including education, culture, sex and
marriage, sports, religion, work and the future. By watching
these programs teenagers in this country can gain a new
perspective on the common aspirations and problems faced by
people everywhere (despite different and usually harsher
conditions) in today's increasingly global society.

1. Youth and the Global Village (Introduction)
Teens around the world listen to the same music, watch the
same videos, and idolize the same pop stars, but do they hold
similar views on issues such as marriage, culture and
religion?

2. The Story of Rosie (Jamaica)
What is the role of the family? 25% of all Jamaican 16-year-
old girls are expecting a baby. Can they reconcile their role
as mother with their desire for a career and a carefree
teenage life?

3. The Story of Idrissa (Niger)
Are cultural values being threatened? Idrissa wants to stay
close to his parents to learn the traditions of his nomadic
tribe, the Touraregs, but that means leaving school. Can
values be maintained in an ever-increasing consumer society?

4. The Story of Eman (Egypt)
Do men and women share the same rights and freedoms? A Cairo
girl hopes to attend university despite cultural traditions.
Like many of her generation, she doesn't always agree with her
parents.

5. The Story of Pintinho (Brazil)
Are sports a ticket to the future? A talented young Brazilian
athlete hopes to kick his way out of the slums by becoming a
soccer star. He's been training for years to attain his dream.
Will he become a member of the Flamengo team?

6. The Story of Puttinan (Thailand)
Are young people being exploited? At 13, Puttinan left her
small village for Bankok, where she toiled under harsh
conditions for three years to help support her family. She
now devotes herself to ending child labor exploitation.

7. The Story of Sonam (India)
Do teens believe in God? Sonam Puljor has been a Tibetan
Buddhist monk since he was eight. While he leads a monastic
life, he's developed a taste for sports, magazines and video
games. Will he keep his monk's robes?

8. Youth and the Future (Conclusion)
How do teens feel about their future? This final episode
unites all six teenagers for a discussion of their global
concerns and an examination of impact American culture has on
their lives.
