MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Restoring the Earth Around Us

28 minutes/Grades 7-Adult

Produced by George Spies

A brief history of environmental destruction during ancient
times leads into three portraits of present-day efforts to
reverse environmental damage. Like us, ancient civilizations
exploited their forests, and their cities were eventually
buried under the topsoil that eroded from the logged
hillsides.

Today, in an effort to prevent history from repeating itself,
community efforts are helping to restore our natural world.
Childhood memories of walking in the woods have motivated
volunteers to replant sequoia trees in the Sierra Nevada
Mountains. Residents operate a fish hatchery to return salmon
to the Mattole River in northern California where silt from
logging operations has almost wiped out the salmon population.
And, in downtown Los Angeles, people from all walks of life
plant thousands of trees to show that anywhere you live, you
can improve your environment. As one organizer reflects, "if
it's going to get done, we have got to do it." With Study
Guide.
