Here is the first chapter in the history of the deforestation
of the Amazon rainforest. In 1943 as agents of their
government, Claudio and Orlando Villas Boas journeyed into
this unexplored region. Their mission was to build a web of
airstrips, connected by roads, to open up the jungle.
Although the encounters between the Boas brothers and native
tribes were peaceful, the cultures of the indigenous people
were assaulted by development and the arrival of outside
interests. The Boas brothers became defenders of the native
people's rights, and their work for this cause earned them a
Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
For this documentary the Boas brothers retrace their steps,
frequently to places they have not seen for decades.
Intertwined with fascinating, previously unreleased archival
footage, here is a new look at the struggle to save the
Amazonian rainforest and its inhabitants.
Awards: Gold Apple, National Educational Film & Video Festival
- "Fascinating production. Stills and footage of indigenous
tribes and lush forests are intercut with contemporary scenes
of growing cities and barren lands as Claudio and Orlando
recall their adventures." Booklist
- "Long before Sting discovered the Amazon Indians in a burst
of fashionable, musical concern, Brazilian explorers Claudio
and Orlando Villas Boas had spent 30 years in the Amazon
jungle as champions of the tribal Indian cause." Yorkshire
Evening Press.
- "...an unusual documentary that provides a fascinating
glimpse of development in a Third World country...much
extraordinary footage, both new and archival, of the rain
forest and its inhabitants is presented...highly recommended
as a discussion stimulator for high schools and/or academic
institutions." **** Video Rating Guide
- "A remarkable story." Eastern Evening News.
