HOW TO SAVE THE EARTH

6 video programs - 26 minutes each

Produced by Central Independent Television/ Hosted by Jonathon
Porritt

In the last few years the world has begun to respond with
urgency as we realize that without fundamental change the
earth's ability to sustain life is seriously in doubt.

HOW TO SAVE THE EARTH, based on Jonathon Porritt's book Save
the Earth, is an international documentary series of six
programs focusing on "Green Warriors" P ordinary people who
are trying to solve environmental problems.

Hosted by Jonathon Porritt, each program documents two diverse
countries with similar problems. Porritt states, "I was
determined not just to do a round up of doom and gloom... I
wanted to show how good organizations, good people, are
getting things done."

With Study Guide.

1. TAKING THE WATERS

There is often a conflict between preserving important
wetlands and utilizing water for human needs. The Danube basin
is currently the focus of a major campaign to stop the
construction of dams that will destroy important wetland sites
and endanger the water supply. While, in Tunisia, an important
bird migration and nesting lake is imperilled by similar
plans.

TAKING THE WATERS looks at the people who are fighting to turn
each area into a national park: Klara Benkovicsova, a
housewife turned green warrior in Czechoslovakia, and Hammadi
Baraket, a government botanist standing up to his employers in
Tunis.

2. THE MONK, THE TREES AND THE CONCRETE JUNGLE

Focusing on southeast Asia, this program looks at what is
being done in Thailand to stop deforestation and the trade in
endangered species. We also visit Japan, a major consumer of
tropical hardwood, and see how action is being taken to change
people's attitudes and influence government policy on the
consumption and acquisition of tropical wood. The green
warriors in this program are Phra Ajaan Pongsak, a Buddhist
monk turned environmentalist and Joichi Kuroda, the leader of
the Japanese Tropical Forest Action Network.

Subtitle: 3. SMOGBUSTERS

Air pollution causes smog, acid rain, ozone depletion and
global warming, yet few countries are actively seeking ways of
reducing emissions. In this program we look at the work of
Eric Mann, a former auto worker who is now promoting an
ambitious but affordable mass transit system in Los Angeles,
and Nei Serra, the green warrior mayor of Cubatao, Brazil,
once labeled "the most polluted place on earth." Serra has
actively promoted pollution controls on the city's cement
works, steel and fertilizer plants and oil refineries, and the
improvement in air quality is readily evident.

4. HANDLE WITH CARE

Many indigenous cultures respect nature and live sustainably
without destroying the natural resources on which all life
depends. But industrial development is often growth at any
cost, frequently damaging our environment and endangering
people's health. This program focuses on two people who are
fighting back and motivating others to become green warriors
themselves: Jorunn Eikjok, a Norwegian woman and member of the
Sami reindeer herders in the Arctic Circle, and Lois Gibbs, an
American housewife who, beginning with her stand on Love
Canal, has taken on some of the most powerful toxic waste
polluters in the US.

Subject Areas: civics, indigenous people

5. LOAVES AND FISHES

Our planet's oceans and farmlands are capable of supplying
food for everyone, if they are harvested in a sustainable
manner. Africa and the North Sea are the locations for this
program, which asks how we can prevent famines and protect the
land and sea resources that provide our food. Featured are:
Melaku Worede, a green warrior scientist in post-war Ethiopia
who is rebuilding the country's food base, and Jens Ole-
Hojmann, a Danish fisherman turned environmentalist working on
Greenpeace's "Fish for Tomorrow" campaign.

6. HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?

Over-population and over-consumption contribute to serious
environmental problems by encouraging over-development of
pristine lands, contributing to pollution, and squandering our
resources. In Mexico City, the world's second largest city,
Carmen Leyte offers family planning education in her community
with the support of MEXFAM. In the US and Canada, where a
child will consume 50 times more resources than a child in
Mexico, Vicki Robin's New Road Map Foundation encourages a
less materialistic lifestyle.
