WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS

Subtitle: Our Children, Our Environment

52 minutes/Grades 9-Adult (In 2 parts for schools, Part 1. 19 min.
Part 2. 33 min.)

A Central/Observer Production in association with Television
Trust for the Environment/Produced by Lawrence Moore and Robbie
Stamp

When it comes to environmental hazards, children act as the
miners' canary. They are always the first to suffer. This moving
film looks at the major causes of suffering to the children of the
world, including pollution, the spread of deserts worldwide, and
the international debt crisis.

The producers worked with filmmakers around the world to look
at the effects of environmental problems on children who can look
forward only to an uncertain future as a result of appalling, and
often entirely preventable, environmental factors.

The film covers five major problems confronted by children
worldwide:

First, poison. In Poland we see the results of pollution
turning up in birth defects.

Second, water. We go to India where 5 million children die
before their fifth birthday from diarrhea caused by unclean water.

Third, flight. In Africa war forces children into refugee camps
which may swell beyond the breaking point if global climate
changes further exacerbate drought-prone areas like the Sudan.

Fourth, debt. In Latin America children are left destitute when
their parents lose their jobs in countries like Bolivia, which owe
vast sums to international banks.

And fifth, population. The film examines the vicious circle of
poverty and scarce environmental resources that results in parents
having more children so that they can work to feed the family.

This is a film that will touch your heart, and put a compelling
human face on environmental destruction.
