16 minutes/Grades 4-Adult
Produced by the National Film Board of Canada/A film by Don
White
This beautifully photographed film examines the characteristics
and ecology of the coastal rain forest of the Pacific northwest.
The high canopy of tall trees and the fragrant decay of the damp
woodland floor display a lush mix of majestic conifers and
deciduous growth. Inhospitable to larger mammals, the tangled
undergrowth teems with frogs and salamanders. This film reminds us
of the exquisite beauty of the temperate rain forest and of our
obligation to preserve its place in nature.
Awards: Best of Category, National Educational Film Festival;
Editor's Choice, Choice Magazine; North American Environmental
Education Film Festival; Great Plains Film Festival
- "This is a highly impressive film that left two classroom
audiences unusually silent. It is well edited, employs minimal
narration, an excellent musical background, and superb
photography. The film has a place in college ecology,
environmental science, botany, and vertebrate history classes and
is outstanding for general audiences." Choice
- "The curriculum nature of this film makes it suitable for
science classes in junior high school and above, as well as for
museums and nature centers." School Library Journal
- "A good introduction to a unit on biomes as it relates plant
adaptations to climate and soil. It could also be used to
demonstrate man's impact in a delicately balanced ecosystem." The
American Biology Teacher
