57 minutes/Grades 9-Adult (16mm on two reels for schools)
Produced by the National Film Board of Canada/A film by Boyce
Richardson
Super-companies, or multinationals, treat the world as a single
market. They take raw materials from one place, process them in
another, and sell them everywhere. They do not work to improve
conditions in their host countries, but seek out the cheapest
materials, the lowest taxes, the best deals. When challenged by
host governments to make a larger contribution to the economy, the
companies simply find more hospitable environments.
The aluminum industry P in Australia, British Columbia, Jamaica
and Norway P is the case study.
Shot on four continents, SUPER-COMPANIES provides a provocative
view of the way our global economy is being shaped by economic
powers that are often at odds with the needs of people.
Awards: Gold Apple, National Educational Film & Video Festival;
Red Ribbon, American Film Festival
